Ticker tape tokens

The Christmas party was tough. I made a 'genuinely phenomenal' entrance but I left with my tail between my staggering legs... I was still feeling the effects on Saturday evening to be honest. Our department met at a local pub before and we'd had about four or five pints before we'd arrived at the venue, which got things moving. The venue was a slightly corporate hotel function room, with a dancefloor separating two groups of tables. When we got there we were issued with four drinks tokens. Instantly I thought it would be the driest party I'd ever been to. There was no-one on the dancefloor so to 'get the party started' I handed someone my drink, took a run up and slid the entire length of the floor on my knees. Bravo. The whole place erupted and I naturally hammed it up with a couple of low bows. From then on it was carnage. There might as well had been a ticker tape parade with drinks tokens! When Andy was announcing the winners of the fancy dress, the drumkit was empty so I jumped on and drumrolled each entry as it was being read out. There was even a bit of time for some fresh beats before the drummer from the band gave me some fresh beats for showing him up on his own kit!
Needless to say it was quite quiet in work on Friday, aside from the groans and moans.

Christmas Party

It's that time again... When everyone else in the land dons their dapper threads, endulges in free booze and makes complete fools of themselves, everyone in our department is getting ready for the Christmas party. I'm sure we'll make the most of it... Obviously I can't speak too loudly on this blog as you never know who might be tuning in! Additionally, Colin has decided to make the Christmas Party night his leaving do, so we've got a whole glut of things to celebrate!... Chiefly that next year I won't be sitting opposite a moaning git! (Ha! Sorry Colin!)
I've found a picture of our department from back at my first Christmas party with them a long four years ago... We went as Mexican wrestlers, I was 'El Bastados' which I had emblazoned across the cape on my back. What a costume, eh? The year after that we went as Beastie Boys and won a bottle of champagne each, which we left at the venue and never saw again. I couldn't make last year, (which was possibly a good thing as things might have worked out differently for me)... and this years theme is 'Prom Night'... Hmm... As I said, I'm sure we'll make the most of it. I've couldn't find my suit last night (who loses a suit!!?) so I've found a jacket, a white shirt and a black tie... I look like a bird who's swallowed a plate.

Pig in blanket

It's all winding down here at work. Yesterday I cleared my desk and emptied my drawers in preparation for the post-Christmas shake-up. It was depressing seeing what I'd had in there, a bit like an archaeological dig, I was unearthing things from years ago I'd long since forgotten about, and realising that I'd been here sat at my desk for a long time. Things you keep, thinking 'I'll use that one day', you soon realise are pieces of worthless junk, fit for nothing but the recycle bin. Anyway, my desk looks like it can breathe again and the Lego Millenium Falcon can now be rehoused at my desk at home! (I'm not getting rid of that!)
We had our work Christmas meal in the canteen this afternoon. Talk about depressing!... Last year we complained en mass as it was so bad, so you'd expect them to up their game a little!... There was a huge mouth-watering display turkey besides where we collected our plated-up lunch. I think it was there to show us what we could have won. All I had on my plate was re-formed turkey roll, a pile of yellow potatoes and some parsnip. Following last years tradition we each got one solitary pig in blanket. Yummy.
We're off out for a department long lunch tomorrow, so I'm hoping the 32 day hung sirloin steak cooked in dripping might taste a little better. I'll let you know... Incidentally did you know that Sirloin was so called as King James the first knighted his dinner.
Another one of those same time tomorrow.

First Christmas

I feel really run down today. I'm not sure whether it's due to excessive Christmas consumption or whether I've caught Kyleigh's cold over the weekend. I just hope it's not the latter because if I'm ill this week, I could infect someone else and they'll be knocked sideways for Christmas and NOBODY likes a sickly child. Anyway, I've stocked up on Echinacea and vitamin C, building barricades in preparation for a pounding.
First Christmas was astounding over the weekend. Really enjoyable. Vintage year! Everything went well, it was brilliant to see everyone, and it meant so much to me that everyone got along so well with May. She did brilliantly entertaining everyone and she slotted right in to the family. We were all introduced to the newest addition of the family, Louise and Mark's baby Owen. I'd met him before but that was Christmas last year... What a difference a year makes, he's a right boon at parties! At 15 months is already dancing and larking about with one of the bigggest grins I'd seen on a young man. Mum did a fantastic job with keeping us fed and watered. The food and drink was top notch, we were still on the bubbly by 5pm which means they must have stocked up! The meal was planned a little earlier this year so we'd have more of the day left to much about, and even though we didn't actually play any family games, we had such a laugh singing, dancing and joking around until we flopped, spent into bed.
Same time next year, then?

Christmas Eve

So it's Christmas Eve for me.. Nice. I'm getting well excited. So excited in fact that I've ordered myself a leather jacket. £90 down from £320, so... You do the math(s).... First ever leather jacket. I said I'd NEVER do it... Never wear a leather jacket, never wear a suit to work and never wear sandals. I'm breaking my own rules of life. I'll be wearing sandals next. What's the world coming to?
Anyway, I'm getting excited about seeing the family and having a good laugh. Kyleigh's got a cold so she might not be so much fun. However I'll tickle her under the chin and ruffle her hair up. (She hates that!)... I've sent May on little shopping trips for Christmas presents all this week as she's not working at the moment. She's been a godsend. She's even marched all the way over to Leytonstone to pick up £20 worth of biltong from the South African shop. She text me whilst she was there and informed me that she was the only white person on the street. I don't think she's used to it. Bless her. I used to live in Brixton, and it's quickly something you get accustomed to. (Is it racist to say that?... I don't think it is. It's an observation and not a slant. For some reason it feels slightly racist to say.)
Anyway, black, white, yellow brown... Let's just put the fists down, have a glass of bibbly and have a fucking good sing along to some Simon and Garfunkel. Bring on the cheer.

The youngest in the crowd

Yesterday I was busy, and slightly tired from a night out at the Hammersmith Apollo where we saw the Steel City Tour. I'd had the tickets for yonks and the day finally arrived for me to see ABC and Human League on the same stage... I mean, I'm not a MASSIVE fan of either of them, but I do like a spot of polished Trevor Horn production and recently have found myself tapping my toes.
I thought ABC were amazing, even though, as Whatley rightly pointed out, Martin Fry looked like a head teacher, and we were the youngest in the crowd... The sound quality was tops and I was able to belt out the lyrics to All of my Heart and Date Stamp with the overweight aging and balding crowd! They went to town with the stage n'all... Everything from the single spotlighted sax player to the logo projected at an angle over the red stage curtain. So 80's it hurt.
Human League weren't bad either, but I'd seen them before. However, it was good to sing along to Electric Dreams. The light show was astounding, flicking through every world leader whilst they played Being Boiled... Funny how they have no problem showing those images when we can't even get a picture of Boris Becker signed off!

Kicked to Camden

Urgh! I honestly feel like I've been kicked from Kentish Town to Camden. Last night was a send off for Aaron and Colin. Everyone was out and proud, wearing their shineyest of shiney blue patent leather shoes. Big Rich had made everyone a booze counter so we could tot up how many we'd had in each pub... It's actually interesting doing that as normally you'd not really count how many, but the reality is quite shocking. It turned out that including shots, I'd had fifteen drinks last night... And that's MORE than the weekly unitary. The not so funny thing is that I've got it all again tonight with The Henson's Lot™! (Although I've decided that I'm going to do the decent thing and 'French Leave'... I've not seen May as she's been up in the Shires for the last two weeks, so we've got some catching up to do!)
Christmas does that; everyone wants a slice of you, you end up spreading yourself and your bank balance very thin. Still... Needs must.

The bubbles are back!

Yesterday was a good day. I can feel it still... The reverberations, the aftermath of yesterday are still kicking about. May got the job. Which is brilliant... Out of the MILLION people applying for what was possibly the ONLY job in London, she made the grade and polished her buttons!... She starts in January which means she's got four weeks of unadulterated Cash in the Attic and Jeremy Kyle until then. I'm made up for her. I was joking with her mum saying we were going to put her in the kennels for being tetchy and grumpy, she said that she'd tried the local kennels but May's reputation had preceded her and she was going to look further afield... I'm happy and the bubbles are back!
In other news, it was Jenny's birthday and everyone went out for a Vietnamese... Which was nice. It was bring your own, and I think collectively we brought the Off Licence. I should have been more careful as it's Aaron's leaving drinks tonight.
Speaking of drinks... Here's a picture of Jonathan... Boris has banned the booze from public transport, so Jon fills up his 'coffee mug' at the offie round the corner. He uses it as a bar, the guy behind the counter puts his empties in the bin for him. Nice.

Albums of the year

I'm pretty much assuming all the decent albums have been released this year, anything past this point is for the Christmas market and won't really affect this definitive list. (I'm not a MASSIVE Take That fan, and although I weirdly fancy the girl off Same Difference, I won't be running out to buy their album!)
So here we go, my top 5 albums of 2008.

1. Elbow - Seldom Seen Kid
(I'll never forget the line 'and it's you, and it's May and we're sleeping through the day'... I thought Guy Garvey was singing to me! Deservedly won the Mercury Prize, shame I missed them in concert.)
2. Late of the Pier - Fantasy Black Channel (What a fantastic mess! Throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks really works. Gary Newman, Roxy Music, Sparks, Queen and Nick Kershaw all in the pot!)
3. Q-Tip - Renaissance (...and I thought hip-hop had died a death. Cool Kids, Plastic Little and Q-Tip bringing it back in 2008.)
4. Foals - Antidotes (Good solid angular album and best live band I've seen this year. The razor sharp drumming makes up for the twee guitar.)
5. Padded Cell - Night Must Fall (I bought this on a whim, but the dark psychedelic breaks and beats have kept me bouncing.)

Young Knives should get a mention for Superabundance. I'm loving their stuff, but it's too similar to their debut to chart. I'm sticking around waiting for the heavily Sparks influenced third album.

Until next year.

Bye bye Shitbox

I'm still waiting for a bloody micro USB cable to turn up so I can download my pictures from the weekend... It's cold this morning, proper gloves and scarf weather as authorised by Colin after he'd told me that it didn't matter how cold it got, he'd never wear a scarf as 'it looks poncey'... He went on to say 'it's fucking cold, I came out to get my car and saw Jack Frost crying his eyes out.'... Dunno what that means, Watford logic.
This morning I finally sold my car on to Red for the princely sum of £20... It needed a lot of work on it and it had been off the road for a year. I'd had some good times with that car, and it was great fun to have around, but ultimately it's so very very.. very expensive to keep a car in London. I remember when I first passed my test and Lou told me that I needed to buy a car and park beside a drain so I can pour money down it... He wasn't wrong. I think in the time that I'd had it, I'd spent more in parking fines than the car was actually worth. But as I'd got it for free from my sister, I figured I'd broke even. Anyway, I've got used to the tube again now and although I miss Radio4 on the drive home, I've got FUCKING good at sudoku... So... every cloud.
Here's a picture of me and 'Shitbox' back in the day.

Norfolkin' Good

What a lovely weekend! Friday was pretty dull though, and went pretty slowly. At four-thirty Aaron said his fond farewells and bid Pentland a final goodbye. As  we're all off on Thursday to have a final knees-up, I didn't stick around Friday night, besides they'd only brought in three bottles of wine between fifteen of us... I grabbed my bag and hopped on the first train (available) to North Norfolk to spend the weekend with May and her parents. I'd not seen her for a week so she really was a sight for sore eyes! Even though the weather was pretty dismal, we spend the weekend going on long walks. Shingle, beach and forest, we were there. I tell you what, you appreciate a toasty warm open log fire much much more after a four hour walk in the pissing cold driving rain, that's for sure!... When we weren't out, we were in, not one droplet of television ensured we were mentally agile for the Rummikub and knockout whist. We dined on the freshest mussels, the softest of silt-free cockles and the most locally dressed crab. I didn't even have time to see what the crab had come dressed as, it was in my mouth and down my gullet before you could say Hunstanton Spice Museum.
I'm so made up that May loves pickled seafood. It makes my heart miss a beat. She really is a girl after my own heart.

Hell and handbags

Word. Yesterday I was emailed a 20% discount flyer for all shops in and around Carnaby Street. The offer was only on from 7-9pm and so I thought I may well head down. It seems the rest of London got the same email... I eventually found myself in what can only be descibed as Dante's vision of Nether Hell. People were shopping like they have an unlimited budget and only one day left to live. Carnage at Carnaby Street... I got in, got the job done and got out. Pity the fools who were queueing for a free crépe and cocktail. They're probably still there.
After a much needed Wong Keis, I headed home to help Helen with her haute couture handbag handbook. She designs pretty fantastic and outlandish high-end leather bags and is currently putting a book together. Here is an example of her work.

Chat chat chat. Thud.

Well I feel a little rough today... It was only accidental and I didn't mean to stay out. It was the Read or Dead handbag launch, which was hosted in an upstairs bar just off Oxford Street... It was quite funny actually, as Read or Dead typically like everything to be relatively kitch and twee, they decorated the room with a myriad of ornate framed paintings and prints. It was clearly hastily done on a shoestring as the frames were only held onto the wall by gaffa tape, which made me giggle as every so often you'd hear a thud as another painting would slip from the wall onto the floor, one of the Red of Dead team running over to secure the picture back on the wall... Chat chat chat. Thud. Giggle.. Chat chat chat. Thud. Giggle...
Then I went home.
...No I didn't I went to another bar.

Genuine pluko

Funny how a smell can whisk you back. I've been out of hair wax for the last couple of days, in the meantime my hair looks as if it's been styled by Crazy Meg. Enough was indeed enough because today I found the pharmacist had some Black & White Genuine Pluko. I've not used, or even seen that stuff since I first moved to London in '94. Nearly fifteen years concertina together allowing a peek into the bathroom at Mornington Terrace, sniffing the heavy applications on bleached hair before a trip to Wong Kei or a night ride around the city on the Fibre Flex... Amazing how you can remember the minutae with one recollecting sniff... The Mean Streets poster and the marker penned picture of 'The Weekend Bacon-Buyer Boy'. The bobble hats on the bannisters and the sounds of Souls of Mischief....
So anyway, I'm hoping to tame that beast with the whip of my youth, tomorrow will be less Crazy Meg and more Slick Rick.

Jaundice Tuesday

So... After the blue Monday comes jaundice Tuesday. I'm happier today, which is why the day is tinged with a yellow hue. It's amazing what powers a pair of tickets for Steel City Tour can do to alleviate most mundanities. Yes! ABC, Heaven17 and Human League in one sugary spoonful!... But I'll have to wait until December to embrace the synth onslaught.
In the meantime, I thought I'd share with you the poster I whipped up for the Christmas party here at work. It's a beaut. My boss said it was the most polished thing he'd seen me do. (I hasten to add, he knows nothing of my skills.).. Click to see it in all its glory.

Aaron leaving card

Another post!... God I'm keen... It's only because I'm new to this blogging, so I'm quite literally going HOG-FINGERING wild! After a departmental shake up two people have taken voluntary redundancy, Aaron is the first to go after 11 years service, he's moving on to pastures greener. I've done him a leaving card... Click to see it proper, like.
I'm digging my new style and recently I've taught myself how to paint with Photoshop. It's amazing how versatile that program is. I still want to get my hands on Painter, unfortunately my employers are pretty tight.

First Post

So here I go... After deliberating for some time, I've decided to start a blog of all things Meric. I'm not sure what direction this will be taking, I'm pretty sure music, nights out, illustration and events, food, petty annoyances and experiences will be the subject matter...
Let us begin by saying that Sundays are a great night to go out. Apart from the fact that you feel more Monday than you'd expect the following day... Here are some people on the tube feeling Monday. Click the picture and share their joy.
